Jägermeister is one of the world’s most iconic liqueurs and a brand deeply rooted in German tradition. The distinctive bottle, the green color, and the stag with the glowing cross between its antlers are well-known symbols – but behind the unique appearance lies a history that dates back to 1934.
The liqueur was created by Curt Mast in the small town of Wolfenbüttel in Lower Saxony. Curt was a passionate hunter who spent a long time experimenting to develop the perfect herbal liqueur – both as a digestif and a tribute to hunting culture. The name “Jägermeister,” which means “master hunter,” was an official title in Germany for senior officials in the hunting administration. The religiously charged stag in the logo refers to the legend of Saint Hubertus, the patron saint of hunters.
The recipe is still secret but is said to contain 56 different herbs, fruits, spices, and roots from around the world. The ingredients are aged, macerated, and matured for several months before the mixture is filtered and chilled – a craft process that results in the complex and well-balanced flavor Jägermeister is known for: bittersweet, spicy, and with a long finish.
Originally, the drink was most popular as a classic after-dinner liqueur in Germany, but in the late 20th century, Jägermeister gained significant international popularity. With the introduction of shots and cocktails – especially the famous “Jägerbomb” – the brand became a phenomenon in bars and nightclubs around the world.
Today, Jägermeister is a global brand with a strong identity that combines tradition, mystique, and a modern attitude. Despite its international success, the drink is still produced exclusively in Wolfenbüttel, where the family-owned company Mast-Jägermeister SE proudly preserves its heritage.
