The history of Timmermans stretches back several hundred years. The brewery’s roots can be found in the village of Itterbeek, just west of Brussels, where a farm with brewing activities was established as early as the late 17th century. The brewery became known as De Mol, and during the 19th century there is clear historical evidence of the production of lambic, faro and other beers. The Timmermans name entered the family history in 1911 when Celina Walravens married brewer’s son Frans Timmermans. Following Frans’ death, the brewery eventually became known as Brouwerij Timmermans.
Over the generations, Timmermans has become closely associated with traditional Belgian lambic culture. Lambic differs from most other beers through spontaneous fermentation, where microorganisms from the surrounding environment initiate the fermentation process. Gueuze is traditionally created by blending lambics of different ages and allowing them to develop further, giving the beer its characteristic refreshing acidity, complexity and lively carbonation.
